Naegele & Mears, CPAs offers services to both individuals and businesses. Clients engage our firm for any combination of their individual and business accounting and tax needs.
It is our job to see that you pay no more tax than the law requires. We monitor the changes in the tax law that affect you and recommend tax saving strategies. We will file all your tax returns and serve as your advocate in all tax matters.
It pays to get a second opinion:
An officer of a prospective corporate client came to us a few years ago for a second opinion on the company’s income tax liability for the fiscal year ended June 30. The company’s accounting firm had estimated the tax liability at $160,000 and he wanted to know what could be done to reduce taxes and conserve working capital. We discussed the issues and developed a strategy, computing our estimate of the tax liability at a conservative $80,000. The prospective client engaged us to perform an audit of the financial statements and to prepare the income tax returns. Upon completion, we determined that the actual tax liability to be $56,624. Our client’s tax return was later selected at random for audit by the Internal Revenue Service under the Taxpayer Compliance Measurement Program, where every line item of the tax return is audited. We represented our client and after three days of field work, the IRS concluded that the tax return was correct as filed.
We do not charge for short phone calls, nor do we charge for initial conferences. Our success since 1987 has been based on providing continuing value to our individual and business clients and using the expertise and resources of team members and partners.
We want you to receive the best financial and tax assistance that is possible. If you have an accounting or tax question or issue, please call us. If you are contacted by any government agency concerning your tax matters, your first call should be to us. A partner will personally work with you.
Personal Income Tax Preparation
Today's tax laws are so complicated that unless your financial affairs are extremely simple, chances are that you will benefit from at least occasional help from a tax professional. It is too easy to overlook deductions and credits to which you are entitled if you prepare only one return a year. Even the use of computer software is no substitute for the eyes of a seasoned tax preparer.
We prepare hundreds of tax returns every year. We know what to look for when your return is prepared. More importantly, you have someone to ask questions of during the rest of the year. And, we will put you on our mailing list to receive timely tax and financial information.
If you have had any life-changing events such as:
- Changing jobs,
- Getting married or divorced
- Starting or moving a business,
- Buying or selling a home,
- Moving from state to state,
these events will complicate your return. Our particular specialty is working with newcomers who have multi-state returns. We prepare, on average, 32 different state income tax returns each year. Don’t get a notice from the IRS for a simple mistake or omission. Contact us to prepare your income tax returns. Evening and weekend appointments are available.
The vast majority of our tax returns are prepared for a quoted fee. We continually strive to balance the highest level of service to every client within the time constraints imposed by the workload compression of “tax season.”
- Every tax return offers a one-on-one consultation with a partner
- Every tax return includes short telephone calls during the year with no extra fee
- Each client receives a quarterly newsletter
- Each client receives a tax organizer in January to help organize tax data
- Each client has access to our website, which includes tax and financial articles, tips, and updates
Let us help you! At Naegele & Mears, CPAs, our clients are primarily professionals and business people, usually with two incomes per family. Our fees are competitive and we will gladly quote you a fee over the phone. We run an efficient office, work is completed promptly, and we are here year-round to answer your questions.
Your tax appointment
Every tax return that we prepare offers a one-on-one consultation with a partner. It is during this time that our clients leave their tax information with us. Evening and weekend appointments are available.
However, some of our established clients drop off or mail their information and use telephone conferences and personal planning sessions during the less busy times of the year to develop their tax planning and savings strategies. If there were no significant events or charges in your tax picture, this may be an attractive option for you this year.
What to bring to your tax appointment:
- Copy of prior year income tax returns, if prepared by someone other then us
- Forms W-2, 1099, and 1098
- Schedule K-1s
- Ad valorem taxes paid on vehicles
- Brokerage statements with cost basis for investment transactions
- Closing statements for real estate transactions
- Home office amounts: square footage, utilities, maintenance
- IRS or state tax authority notices
Tax Preparation and Technology
We offer electronic filing for no additional fee for those who desire to use it.
Every established individual client receives a tax organizer sometime in January of each year. A tax organizer is a booklet that you can choose to fill in rather than bringing us most original documents. It is a great tool to remind clients of income and deductions that they may have.
The organizer is available via e-mail. If you would like to receive your organizer via email, please send us an email request to email@example.com and indicate within the text your full name and the email address to which to send the organizer.
Personal Financial Planning
Many of our individual clients look to us for
- Personal financial statements
- Tax planning
- Financial planning
- Retirement planning
- Estate planning
We can work with investment advisors and can suggest established, licensed investment firms for our clients to consider.
We would much rather discuss a financial option or strategy during the year than learn of a “cast in concrete” transaction the next spring. This is a primary method that we use for saving you taxes.
We employ many tax planning strategies, including:
- Splitting income among several family members or legal entities in order to get more of the income taxed in lower brackets.
- Shifting income from one year to another in order to have it fall where it will be taxed at the lower rate.
- Shifting deductions from one year to another to place them where the tax benefit will be greater.
- Deferring tax liability through certain investment choices and pension plan contributions.
- Structuring your affairs in order to obtain a tax deduction for expenses paid for things you enjoy - a vacation home, for example.
- Suggesting investment strategies for your money to produce income that is exempt from either federal or state income tax or both.
We advise clients on the tax implications of their investment strategies and willingly meet with their advisors when requested. We will act as your sounding board. We will review your investment ideas with you and your investment advisor and suggest the best structure to maximize your after-tax return. We do not sell insurance or securities.
Don't ignore the impact of taxes on your investments. While taxes should not drive your investment strategy, understanding how taxes affect your earnings will help you minimize them. Consider these items:
- Capital gains carry a favored tax status. Consider putting more dollars in investments that return capital gains.
- You can take an annual deduction of up to $3,000 of capital losses in excess of capital gains. Consider balancing your winners and losers to maximize this deduction.
- Investments which produce high taxable annual income can be given to family members who are in lower tax brackets, thereby saving taxes for the overall family group.
- Depending on your tax bracket, you may benefit from investing in municipal bonds.

Most of our ongoing work for businesses is billed at agreed-upon fees. Invoices are presented upon completion of work, or monthly if the work is extensive, and are due in 30 days. Every effort is made to assign work to the least expensive resource in order to minimize our pricing.
Extended telephone calls or time commitments will be billed at an hourly rate.
Business Accounting (Compilation of Financial Statements)
We compile financial statements for many clients, all of which have different starting points. Some of our clients give us their checkbook stubs and deposit slips and we generate their general ledger and financial statements. Other clients give us a general ledger and we generate journal entries and financial statements. Some clients need help with budgeting, cost analysis, acquisition planning, and other services in addition to financial statement preparation.
Many of our clients receive services on a monthly basis; some quarterly or annually. Clients who regularly schedule our services receive time priority over clients who use our services less frequently.
Business Accounting and Technology
Many of our clients use QuickBooks or Peachtree Accounting software. We have the capability of receiving and sending this data totally electronically. On our secure servers are several current versions of these two software packages so that we can interchange information without forcing an upgrade.
Usually our financial statement compilation work is done on more complex software that was developed for accountants.
Audit and Review
In addition to compilation services, our firm also offers review and audit services. If your business needs a review or audit by a CPA in order to obtain or maintain financing or grants, contact us.
Most of our business accounting clients rely on us to prepare their annual personal income tax returns. We also have many clients for whom we prepare the business income tax returns. Usually this involves a review and adjustment of the financial statements they provide to us.
We can also prepare payroll, property, and sales tax returns. (We do not provide real time payroll services; there are several payroll companies that we feel provide these services at fair prices.) We can calculate payroll tax deposits and gross-to-net paychecks for you.
Business Startup Services
Each year, we help many businesses get started. You don’t have to use an attorney to incorporate your business. Our firm can do it for you! We will advise you regarding the most appropriate tax form for your business (LLC, S Corp, Partnership) and we will register your new business with the IRS, state and local tax authorities. We can also help you prepare pro forma financial statements for your new business.
